Medjool is the sticky, almost toffee-ish date, and it is the only one that gives this much back in a spirit. The dry, pressed ones look like a saving until you taste what they leave behind, which is very little.
The treacle brings the depth and the near-black colour, and with the dates it gives the finish its Christmas pudding character.

It finishes like the last spoonful of one, which is the bit worth having. Date and treacle carry it all the way through, and at 49% it stays a rum rather than turning into a dessert sauce.

Really. A hard, salty cheese — an aged cheddar, a pecorino, a wedge of Comté — does the same job with this that it does with a sticky sweet wine. Try it once before you decide.
